James Silberstein is a name well known on the New York jazz scene. His second CD for CAP finds the guitarist surrounded by some of the city's top musicians for these 2007 sessions. A fluid bop stylist,
Silberstein has impressed a number of veteran guitarists with his tremendous chops and good taste. His fresh looks at standards include a blistering take of "From This Moment On," "You Don't Know What Love Is" (which adds a subtle piano vamp and
Harvie S' mournful arco bass), and a samba setting of "Skylark."
Silberstein's heartfelt solo of
J.J. Johnson's "Lament" is a lyrical miniature. The leader's three originals also merit attention. The easygoing bossa nova "Shadows" adds
Kate McGarry's wordless vocal, while his rapid-fire attack is prominent in "Express Lane." Recommended.
