RIVRS debut EP Falling collects some of the electro-pop duo's early tracks and shows just how much Charlotte Mallory and Finn Munro's music evolved over a handful of songs. "Friend Lover," the pair's 2015 debut for Charli XCX's label Vroom Vroom, is still a highlight, a piece of atmospheric synth-pop that reflects how massively popular that sound was in the mid-2010s, as well as the duo's skill at bridging the gap between '80s veterans and 2010s trendsetters. Elsewhere, the EP traces how ably RIVRS incorporated R&B leanings into their music: "Falling" and "Something About You" nod to contemporaries like AlunaGeorge as well as the style's '90s roots, but Munro and Mallory's newfound confidence is entirely their own. While not every track here is quite so assured -- "Last Love" is "Friend Lover"'s less distinctive cousin, while "Kill My Fears" is a hodge-podge of trap beats and EDM synths -- Falling still suggests that RIVRS are headed in the right direction as they discover who they are.
