With the vocals of a hopeless romantic,
Macavity kick off this album with some emotional rock riffs and a very swaying melody. Talking about neurons in "Another Try at Something New," the song resembles
Incubus being covered by
the Gin Blossoms. And, fortunately, it works almost perfectly. The band indulges in a spacy kind of dream pop on "Floating," especially in the tender guitar riffs and slight blips and bleeps. The tune also has a very
Cure-ish quality to it in its arrangements and tone before picking up its guitar-heavy intensity. Marching band-style drumming introduces "It's Okay to Say Goodbye" before evolving into another emo-rock song. While such numbers about broken hearts could be considered lame, lyrically they aren't overly clichéd. "Trapped By Design" comes across as less than satisfactory, despite the staggered dual vocals. But the song's false finish and rising crescendo compensate for any deficit. "Rockets in the Stack" is the group's take on power punk, but pales compared to previous numbers. Musically,
Macavity creates intricate arrangements with a certain melancholia etched in each. By far, the highlight is the closing epic "Goodnight, Sweet Dreams," a song that seems to gather strength the longer it goes. "You make me feel alive," sings Beau Wagner during the track. The same could be said for this impressive mini-collection. ~ Jason MacNeil
