The Trio Wanderer delivers what may be its best disc yet with this 2010 Harmonia Mundi recording of Gabriel Fauré's two piano quartets. The French group has turned in outstanding performances of chamber music by Germans like Brahms, Austrians like Schubert, and Russians like Shostakovich, but here it has turned to music from the homeland, and the result is as well played and even more deeply felt. As always with this group, the ensemble is tight but supple, the rhythms hard-charging in fast movements, and the expressivity super-charged in slow movements. The players dig deep into the outer movements of the early C minor Quartet, but touch the heart in the lush Adagio. Better yet is the magnificent G minor Quartet, with its soaring outer movements and tenderly passionate central Adagio non troppo. Recording in "you are there" digital sound, this disc should appeal to listeners who like the composer or enjoy chamber music.
