The light, casual grace of Philadelphia's Snow Fairies is immediately evident on their first full-length, 2003's Feel You Up. "April Showers" kicks things off, with Rose Bochansky's vocals melding with the band's catchy pop hooks to intrigue all fans of light-hearted twee. The band's festive, party-like demeanor is obvious throughout. The jangly guitars and sugary lyrics on songs like "Cutting a Rug With You" and "Mind the Gap" only add to the album's fairy tale-like aura. Guitarist Jayme Guokas chimes in on vocals on the anthemic "Begins," adding a new voice to the playground feel of the whole album. "Lovers in the Countryside" is quintessential Snow Fairies: charming and simple, anything but decadent and overbearing. The layered female vocals on "Tongue Tied" add another richness to the band's simple formula. The disc ends with the child-like reminiscence of "Freeze-dried Ice Cream" and the up-and-down "Almond Eyes." Keyboardist Melissa Kramer, bassist Joel Tannenbaum, and guitarist Neal Ramirez add to the album's clean instrumentation, while Justin Staller and Frank Jordan split drumming duties. Becky Barron guests on backing vocals. The disc shows a band finding its feet, rewriting the indie pop history books, one note at a time.
