Something of a throwback to the early '90s heyday of the Touch & Go label's bands with a firm grasp on quiet/loud dynamics and powerful rhythm sections, Chicago’s Poison Arrows have even recruited genre patron saint Steve Albini to record their rugged debut, FIRST CLASS, FOREVER. Languid heaviness like the scrambling, fuzzy “Casual Wave” and rumbling “Peruvian Mountain Flight” both tow the line between artistic expansiveness and indie grit. And the sparse, keyboard-accented “An Unexploded Dream” barely rises above a whisper, suggesting rather than making explicit the rhythms of the fuller songs.
