Mark Shilansky is a superior modern mainstream pianist. He really does not sound like any of his predecessors, although one can hear hints here and there on this CD of many players, including Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, early Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea, among others. His chord voicings are personal and fairly distinctive, and even at his most complex, he always swings. For this date, Shilansky did very well in picking sidemen. Bassist Steve LaSpina often acts as a second voice, not so much supporting the pianist as constantly challenging and pushing him. Drummer Jeff Hirshfield is quiet and subtle, but also never predictable, and constantly offers commentary. Shilansky performs three originals, along with Chick Corea's "Humpty Dumpty" and four reharmonized standards, including "Love for Sale" and "I Remember You." By adding vamps and extensions, Mark Shilansky makes all of the tunes sound fresh and highly individual. Recommended.
