Since the start of the 2010s, Australia has been exporting new musical gems non-stop to the rest of the world. The latest takes the form of Olivia Jayne Bartley, aka Olympia, with her brilliantly classy sophomore indie-pop album Flamingo. Three years after Self Talk, the Wollongong-born Melburnian reminds us that she knows Blondie’s records like the back of her well-manicured hand. Indeed, the abundance of powerful choruses (Star City and Shoot to Forget being particularly noteworthy) recall Debbie Harry’s band throughout. Expertly mixing power pop ballads with guitar solos and hedonistic synth pop, this record is nothing revolutionary, but full of emotion nonetheless © Clotilde Maréchal
