The musicianship on keyboardist Bob Hinz's Flying Colors is excellent and the solos are not bad. However the music falls into the "happy jazz" category of lightweight feel-good sounds, with many of the melodies sounding like they could work well as television theme songs. Neither Hinz nor altoist Ron Bertolet (who doubles on soprano) have distinctive sounds, and the rhythm section (which has Hinz playing the basslines on his keyboards) is quite anonymous. With all but one of the songs music clocking in between 4:08 and 5:25, radio airplay seems to have been the main goal for these musicians rather than seeking to say anything new or fresh. The results, although well-played, are instantly forgettable.
