This album features a standard quintet with fluegelhornist
Art Farmer,
Jimmy Heath (on tenor, soprano and flute) and pianist
Fritz Pauer taking the solos. What makes this out-of-print LP (last available on Pausa) more special than normal are the six rarely performed compositions, none of which became standards but all of which hold one's interest.
Tom McIntosh's "The Day After," the
Farmer-
Heath collaboration "Con-Fab" and
Fritz Pauer's "Whole Tone Stomp" are good vehicles for these musicians' talents. ~ Scott Yanow
