Tokyo Gakuso, here comprised of a full gagaku orchestra of over a dozen musicians and over 20 instruments, offers several different styles of performance on
Gagaku: Gems From Foreign Lands, a release by Celestial Harmonies. The first three songs are a kuniburi-no-utamai, which is performed only at very special ceremonies such as Imperial succession. The next three songs -- tracks four through six -- are a kangen performance of a togaku piece, and the next two -- tracks seven and eight -- are a komagaku performance in a kangen style. Associate Professor Steven G. Nelson provides the insightful annotation, which is especially helpful to anyone not familiar with Japanese music.
