From the heart of New Jersey, Gern Blandsten Records has been putting out some endearing and daring records for most of the 1990s. With nine years and 50 releases under their belts, this comp stands not only as a document of accomplishments, but also as a collection of some phenomenal songs and artists. Featuring 24 tracks, one from every band that the label has worked with, Gern Blandsten Records Classics: 1992-2001 is a fine sampling of the varied styles in indie rock and a great introduction to some phenomenal artists you may have overlooked in the past years. All the tracks have been previously released, but if you weren't lucky enough to hear them the first time, the disc contains great tracks from hip-hop innovators Dalek, punk-pop heroes Weston, upbeat rockers Chisel, and early-'90s punk mainstays Garden Variety. There are history-making early bands including Native Nod, Sticks & Stones, and the mighty Rorschach as well. For the forward thinkers and more experimental listeners out there, the disc includes the chaotic supergroup World Inferno Friendship Society, the Will Oldham-like Holy Childhood, noise rockers All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors, and the monsters of loud rock, Rye Coalition. There's a bit of everything on the record, and plenty to really like. Most of these bands have gained quite a reputation for themselves, and anyone who has missed out on the majority of this material should probably take a listen; you may find yourself a new favorite band. ~ Peter J.
