This solo recording is a tad unusual for
Maltese, who generally works with small ensembles. Most of this release is a collection of ten performances on bass clarinet and alto and soprano saxophones. These work well, as
Maltese explores sounds, colors, and shades, while displaying some extended technique. The last part of the CD features the saxophonist with live electronics, synthesizer and overdubbed flutes.
Maltese favors spatial constructs, where he explores sonorities and delves into the essence of tones. Far removed from new age explorations, the saxophonist sculptures unique forms that sometimes successfully convey intense emotion. This is a difficult project that requires intense concentration both from the instrumentalist and the listener. It is music of layered simplicity that contains moments of stark beauty. ~ Steve Loewy
