Dave Peck's style, chord voicings, and approach to playing in a trio are very reminiscent of
Bill Evans, and not only because he utilizes one of
Evans' drummers (Joe La Barbera) on this recording. His versions of six standards,
Duke Ellington's obscure "Low Key Lightly," and his own "The First Song of Spring" are generally thoughtful and a bit introspective even during the tracks that are taken at faster tempos. The interplay between
Peck, bassist Jerry Johnson, and La Barbera is tight yet spontaneous and their music, though not a copy since it is creative within the genre, will please
Bill Evans fans. ~ Scott Yanow
