As spiritual jazz goes, it's hard not to compare a work to
John Coltrane's seminal A Love Supreme. There is something elementally affirming about that work that is missing from this more dogmatic jazz-pop affair from
Whalum and company. While one certainly cannot question the sincerity of feeling in
Whalum's love of Christ, the slick quality of the work feels more commercial than spiritual. The pat "I Love Jesus" choral parts don't help much. In the end, it sounds like born-again
David Sanborn. ~ Tim Sheridan
