On this Stomp Off CD, the hard-driving South Frisco Jazz Band plays typically exciting Lu Watters and Turk Murphy-inspired trad jazz. Unfortunately, Watters alumnus Bob Helm is on half of the program, consistently playing his clarinet and soprano way out of tune and lowering the date's quality. His presence is a pity, for otherwise this is a strong set, with the other horns (Dan Comins and Leon Oakley on cornets, trombonist Jim Snyder and Mike Baird on clarinet, soprano and alto) all in fine form. Half of the program was recorded in 1989 (coincidentally within a day of Watters' death) and the remainder on two days in 1991. As is usual with Stomp Off sets, a good portion of the tunes are quite obscure (such as "Brother Lowdown," "Little John's Rag" and "First Step One Step"), along with gems from both the 1920s and the Watters and Murphy songbooks. But Helm's intonation problems are unfortunate.
