The Great Circle Saxophone Quartet is an avant-garde group that is closer in style to
Rova than to
the World Saxophone Quartet. The musicians' complex compositions feature both arranged and improvised ensembles. Each piece seems to have its purpose, and out of the dozen performances, seven are quite concise, being under two and a half minutes long.
Anthony Braxton and classical music are influences, but the Great Circle Saxophone Quartet's sound, style, and conception are pretty original, resulting in music that is sometimes jarring, often intense, occasionally melodic, and always unpredictable. ~ Scott Yanow
