The dozen selections included on this album are taken from several different radio broadcasts from a 13-month period; neither the exact recording dates (it only says 1946) nor the personnel are given -- inexcusable omissions. The soloists in the short-lived Buddy Rich Big Band generally include trumpeter Tommy Allison, trombonist
Earl Swope, clarinetist
Aaron Sachs and tenor saxophonist
George Berg, along with the fiery drummer/leader. The music is forward-looking swing influenced a bit by bebop. If the music were being reissued completely and in chronological order, it would gain a higher rating, but even so, this obscure album should interest big band and bop collectors. Highlights include "What Is This Thing Called Love," "Great Moments," "Carioca" and "Four Rich Brothers." ~ Scott Yanow
