Once upon a time in dance music, labels, not artists, ruled the roost. Nina Kraviz’s трип (a.k.a. Trip) label seems determined to return to that world, releasing a steady stream of compilations as definitive as any artist’s album. трип 23 looks fondly on the ’90s in other ways, too, with a focus on warehouse-shaking techno at its most intense. The kick drums are uniformly concussive, the synths sound like rats have gnawed through the cabling, and the mood is trippy, if not outright unhinged. Newcomer Carlota’s “Your Destination” balances dreamlike vocal samples with greased-up jazz bass; Kraviz’s collaboration with the New York instrument builder Snazzy, a.k.a. Dan Snazelle, takes lo-fi techno to twisted new depths. And Buttechno lives up to his rep as Russia’s answer to Aphex Twin with mind-melting drum programming and savage acid.
