Directly following his first album for Stones Throw, the wonderfully warped Energy Dreams, Israeli left-fielder Rejoicer (Yuvi Havkin) released a shorter batch of beats titled Heavy Smoke. With only six brief tracks, the artist repeatedly establishes a mood for a few precious minutes before shutting the off switch and starting up another one. It all goes by in a flash, and for most of the tracks, it seems like the ideal way to listen is to just put it on repeat and go about your daily tasks, absorbing the music as it permeates your consciousness. "Noted" sets the tone with a laid-back funk groove, as an inventive bassline darts around underneath the layers of cruising, fluttering keyboards. "Heavy Smoke" features calming lyrics by Iogi, bringing to mind the tone of early-2010s Toro y Moi, except with a much more complex time signature. "Shibuya Zen" also plays around with rhythms; the beats skip around in a seemingly disjointed fashion, and they're surrounded by several shades of detached, alien synths, yet there's still a weightless drive which keeps the track afloat. "Five Winds" catches your attention with its strange rattling noises, but the low-gravity bounce to the beat induces a head-nod, and the array of complex yet airy textures and melodies captivate the imagination. Much like Energy Dreams, Heavy Smoke is constructed from a wide range of offbeat textures and unconventional rhythms, and while it could turn out a confusing mess in the hands of some producers, Havkin has the skills to make it all go down smoothly and pleasantly without being too safe or predictable.
