Jim Saltzman is a powerful tenor saxophonist whose style is at times reminiscent of
Ernie Watts and
Michael Brecker without copying either great.
Saltzman is joined on his set of ten originals by a top-notch East Coast rhythm section that handles the straight-ahead, modal and adventurous material flawlessly. The solos of
Saltzman and pianist Pat Firth (who also doubles on electric piano) are full of passion and intensity. The only fault to the disc is that none of
Saltzman's originals, which contain challenging chord changes that inspire the players, have memorable melodies. The music is harmonically adventurous, driving and full of excitement despite the lack of distinctive themes, and
Jim Saltzman shows throughout
