Spoon hail from Missouri, and
Holding Flowers tends to sound like it -- under the trio's string-soaked balladry is a warm core of earnest, strummy pop that sometimes verges on the melodramatic. Given the fact that the album's line-up doesn't include a proper drummer, the group wisely sticks to minimal, down-tempo constructions of acoustic guitars and strings, and fair songwriting keeps this formula reasonably effective.
