Since 2007, Joe Zimmerman has been staying true to the sounds of his dad’s ‘50s and ‘60s record collection. At the same time, he’s proving that old-school rockabilly-garage rock is far from dead. Like many other retro-rockers, Joe and his bandmates seek out the vintage equipment that gives music its enviable tone—and with that sound within their reach, they write songs that could just as easily be on albums by Link Wray, The Sonics, The Monks, or any number of Nuggets and Pebbles collections. “Outta My Mind” rocks out with a catchy tune. “Back in Town” puts drummer Jeff Doing, organist Katey Trowbridge, and bassist Brandon Goehner through their paces. Just as Poison Arrow announced their talents, How to Make a Monster! proves that The Rebel Set are no fluke. Rock ’n’ roll may not be the culturally dominant music it once was, but it sure has plenty of solid bands proving it isn’t finished. All hail The Rebel Set!
