L’histoire de la musique est remplie de one-hit wonders, ces groupes qui font un hit, avant de disparaître dans la nature. Les Lumineers – qui signaient l’un des plus gros tubes de 2012 avec Ho Hey – n’ont clairement pas l’intention de subir le même sort. Ce troisième album se divise en quatre EP. Il est édifié sur les fondations de son prédécesseur (Cleopatra, 2016) à la fois musicalement et thématiquement, et fait preuve d’une démarche artistique particulière : ses 13 pistes sont conçues comme la bande-son d’un court-métrage, par ailleurs présenté au Festival international du film de Toronto. Le sujet de cet ensemble, dont la filmographie est réalisée par Kevin Phillips, se place indirectement dans l’héritage des Rougon-Macquart de Zola : l’alcoolisme, l’addiction et leurs conséquences s’étalent sur plusieurs générations familiales, sur fond de précarité et d’isolation rurale. Il serait facile d’aborder ces thèmes avec l’œil d’un cynique – les jugeant comme une simple réaction du groupe à l’étiquette festive qui leur colle à la peau – cependant, il y a là les traces d’un vécu bien réel pour Wesley Schultz : l’alcoolisme d’un proche et l’overdose d’un de ses meilleurs amis en 2002 ont été autant de points d’inspiration précédant la réalisation de III.

Musicalement, on retrouve un habillage folk-rock de guitares acoustiques et de piano, sur des cadences plus lentes ; à l’écoute de Left for Denver ou Old Lady, on pensera facilement à un autre auteur-compositeur du Midwest, ayant lui-même bataillé avec l’alcool : Jason Isbell. Celui-ci est le pendant de la douleur exprimée par Schultz : alors que le premier relate son expérience de victime prise au piège d’une spirale infernale, le deuxième n’en est que le spectateur impuissant. III dépeint ce rapport avec justesse, sans jamais verser dans des dualités simplistes. La reprise du Democracy de Leonard Cohen confirme la volonté des Lumineers de s’inscrire dans une démarche quasi documentaire : de décrire à la fois les noirceurs les plus profondes, les sommets les plus éclatants de l’Amérique, et tout ce qu’il y a entre les deux.
