Matt Brouwer received his musical baptism by throwing himself onto the stage. Five years before this album's release, Brouwer was the worship leader for Monday Night Worship, a gathering of college students at Parry Bible College in Alberta. Starting with 20 people, the gathering gradually grew to hundreds that lead to a post-college tour, prominent label interest, and a record deal. His first release entitled Imagerical is a reflection of the struggles and victories over those five years. Where many praise and worship records end, this disc begins. There's a funkiness that steps outside of the lines here. Brouwer has the luxury here of utilizing the band he's played with for the past few years. You can tell by the songs continuity that there's a great relationship there. Songs like "Sanity" and "A New Song" both shy away from a soloist vibe and give into a "band" effort. Each cut features solid rhythm and lyrics. Brouwers' vocals are a highlight as driving drums and guitars abound. Cuts like the title track and "Water" both soar, the first with well-placed scratches and synths, the latter with a toe-tapping guitar melody and a moving bassline. "Lead" is a passionate venture, reminiscent of "Michael W. Smith"; the tune features looping drums with a touching piano-driven melody. Where Brouwer is really victorious is on the slower cuts. "Come and Be" is a song of worshipful elegance and forthright praise, while "Rivers of Mercy" weaves an acoustic guitar with undeniable lyrical faith. Imagerical is an impressive and heartfelt debut from Matt Brouwer.
