Recorded live at San Francisco's beat-era mecca the Hungry I,
In Person captures an energy often absent from
Frank D'Rone's studio efforts. Backed by only a small rhythm section,
D'Rone also accompanies himself on guitar, creating an appealing folk-jazz atmosphere perfectly attuned to the venue in question. In fact, while the bossa nova and swing tunes that open the set are wonderful, it's the solo performances that prove most impressive:
D'Rone sings with understated sophistication, clearly relishing the intimacy of the moment. Songs like "But Not for Me" and "I'll Remember April" summon the most emotionally nuanced vocals of his career.
