Although
Khan Jamal is an advanced improviser, the sound of his vibes always gives his music a somewhat mellow and accessible air, even when he is at his most adventurous. This Stash LP (three of the five selections have been reissued on the CD Don't Take No) matches
Jamal with altoist
Byard Lancaster (doubling on flute), a Philadelphia-based rhythm section and, on "Infinity" (which dates from 1984), a group that includes Clifton Burton on harmonica and the legendary free drummer
Sunny Murray.
Jamal contributed four of the five songs, while pianist Bernard Sammul brought in a cooking "The Angry Young Man." Excellent and generally overlooked music. ~ Scott Yanow
