Intercepting Fist by Dim Mak - DeepRiffs

The hardcore thrash metal of Dim Mak combines the tight groove of Pantera with the speed and songwriting of classic death metal. Unfortunately, the band has not quite figured out how to make the two styles see eye-to-eye, resulting in the aggressive nothingness that is Intercepting Fist. Give them credit on one thing, this album has awesome song titles. Names like "Tai Pan Snake Venom" and "Den of the Avalanche Dragon" are classic kung-fu-inspired titles. Unfortunately, that is about as far as the band can go creatively, as most of the tracks are competently played but are as bland as they could possibly be. The band certainly has energy on its side, spewing out these ditties with the rage of a hundred Phil Anselmos. But music does not survive on rage alone, and there is not enough under the surface to justify the aural assault. There are exceptions, especially toward the end. Tracks like "Nine Head Serpentine Sire" and "Essence of the Northern Gates" string together enough cool-sounding parts to be fairly memorable headbangers. But most of this album is a blur of riffs and screams, and until they manage to nail down their sound, this is a band with all the right ingredients just waiting for the right recipe. ~ Bradley Torreano
