It's very hard to tell from the cover of this release what you're getting, but rest assured it isn't an album of Renaissance and Baroque lute music, or even of contemporary compositions in that vein. Dutch lutenist and composer Jozef van Wissem uses the lute in an unusual context: he plays his own compositions, which fall essentially under the minimalist and trance umbrellas but also make use of the retrograde technique in a simple way: each piece plays out to a certain point and then goes into reverse. There's nothing new in the simple chords and arpeggios of which these seven compositions are made up. What's unusual is the presence of the lute itself, which goes counter to the general minimalist preference for pure tones. Whether you like this kind of thing depends entirely on your feelings about the source material, but the lute, an extremely complex instrument sonically, adds something to that source material. Van Wissem has played Renaissance music in the past, and he has augmented music of this sort with electronics. The plain lute may well be the most effective. Recommended for those inclined toward both minimalism and the extremely offbeat.
