Like many of his contemporaries (Charlie Rich, George Jones), Conway Twitty spent some time as a rock & roller before he became a country star. IT'S ONLY MAKE BELIEVE documents that period, cherry-picking the best of his recordings for the MGM label. Twitty's known for having a larger-than-life voice, but in his younger days, before he learned to temper it, it was a wild, untamed force of nature. Listening to him emulate Sun-era Elvis (quite well) on “Long Black Train” or turn “Danny Boy” into a rocker is one thing, but his raw, almost feral growl on the rockabilly waltz “It's Driving Me Wild” and his unhinged, heart-on-sleeve wail on the R&B ballad “There Is Something On Your Mind” show that, long before his countrypolitan days, Twitty was busy letting it all hang out.
