The third Jackass movie soundtrack is another well-thought-out collection of songs to accent dimwitted, ball-breaking stunts. Roger Allan Wade’s “If You’re Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough,” a song seemingly written for
Knoxville and the crew, pops up again. This time, Spike Jonze’s partner from the
Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack,
Karen O (
the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), performs a silly rendition with her best Southern drawl, as the Jackass gang howls their approval from the background.
The Minutemen’s “Corona,” the show’s theme, also gets made over in an epic, operatic style before the cast takes the mike to assist
Weezer on a special rendition of “Memories” (presumably, also a favor to Jonze to pay him back for his work on their biggest video.) All of these moments are fun, as are the songs picked to match the onscreen roller skating action “You Can’t Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd” and “Brand New Key,” but the best jams are the ones that really get the adrenalin pumping, notably the hard-rocking cuts from the early ‘80s, like
Cock Sparrer’s “I Got Your Number,”
Gang Green’s “Alcohol” (which wasn’t featured in the movie), and
Twisted Sister’s “The Kids Are Back.” The new, and punky “Been Blown to Shreds” by
Sassafras and “Invisible Man” by
Smut Peddlers are fitting as well, but enough with the CKY already, OK Bam? ~ Jason Lymangrover
