The music on
Jazz Project is rather erratic, ranging from easy listening ballads, poppish pieces, and music designed for potential airplay to two Afro-Cuban jazz gems ("Pacifico" and "Cohension") that show what the CD could have been. The personnel changes from track to track with much of the music being unfortunately rather lightweight, other than the two mentioned pieces which include such players as saxophonists
Justo Almario and
David Sanchez, pianist
Edsel Gomez, and percussionists
Alex Acuna and
Giovanni Hidalgo. On the evidence of this CD, however,
Humberto Ramirez (who wrote all nine songs except for one piece by his father) seems to have the goal of being the Latin
Herb Alpert, doing little other than stating simple melodies. He is certainly capable of better. ~ Scott Yanow
