For listeners not ready to tackle the more frenetic world of
Parker's bop innovations, this fine sampler of his ballad work will be welcome news; no "Ko-Ko" here, just several stellar showcases for Bird's pathos-rich and bittersweet alto flights. The mix includes both combo dates ("Star Eyes") and strings sessions ("Dancing in the Dark"), with several classic interpretations still to mention ("Autumn in New York," "I'll Remember April," etc.). Plus, there's a stellar and long list of bop stars to check out along the way. Not the first-call introductory disc, but a set still chock-full of enough gold to make for a very enjoyable evening by the stereo. ~ Stephen Cook
