More than 170 years after his death, composer Joseph Leopold Eybler has finally found a champion for his music. The Eybler Quartet, named after the composer, has made it part of its mission to expose listeners to the works of lesser-known composers from the first century of string quartet literature. Performing on period instruments, the Eybler Quartet does a splendid job of bringing new life to the music of a composer who struggled most of his life to find notoriety. The performances are crisp and clean, using only a minimum amount of vibrato. Fast movements are sparkling and always quite graceful; sound quality during slow movements is almost glass-like in its transparency. Balance between the instruments is well thought out; like the Haydn quartets in their favoritism for the first violin, each member of the quartet is allowed to be clearly heard here. The works themselves, composed when Eybler was only 22 years of age, reflect carefree youthful exuberance, even in the more brooding C minor quartet. This album is certainly recommended as a welcome addition to any string quartet collection.
