The Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley,
Dana Landry is also a fine modern mainstream pianist. His set is actually dominated by the presence of vibraphonist
Gary Burton.
Burton is the star soloist on the selections on which he appears (no great surprise there), and the originals by
Landry and bassist
Erik Applegate are in a style not that different than
Burton usually plays. Saxophonist
Don Aliquo (best on tenor) has a few solid solos and the rhythm section is supportive of
Landry and
Burton. This is a fine release overall, although one would prefer that
Dana Landry had stretched out much more. ~ Scott Yanow
