Seit vielen Jahren ist die Musikerin Dota Kehr als Songwriterin bekannt - als "Kleingeldprinzessin", mit der Band Dota und die Stadtpiraten oder im Alleingang mit Top-20-Alben wie Keine Gefahr (2016) oder Die Freiheit (2018). Auf dem im April 2020 veröffentlichten Kaléko präsentiert sie erstmals Songs mit fremden Texten: Die 14 Stücke sind Vertonungen der Lyrik von Mascha Kaléko (1907-1975), die in den 20er und 30er Jahren in Berlin zu den Vertretern der Neuen Sachlichkeit gehörte und dann als Jüdin nach New York emigrieren musste. Dota Kehr interpretiert ihre Texte als zarte, introspektive Akustik-Nummern mit etwas Jazz-Flair, als Gäste sind dazu u.a. Hannes Wader, Konstantin Wecker, Max Prosa, die Alin Coen Band und Francesco Wilking von Die Höchste Eisenbahn zu hören. Das Album stieg auf Platz 13 in die deutschen Charts ein.
