The 25th Anniversary edition of
Kick is the third time the album has been expanded on CD, and it is by far the most satisfying, containing a second disc which rounds up the previously released demos along with B-sides ("Do Wot You Do") that for some reason didn't make the first CD reissue. There is also a second CD of remixes and single mixes (primarily of "New Sensation" but also of "Devil Inside"), and a DVD documentary about the making and release of the album. Some of this stuff is pretty rough -- and some of the remixes are heavily redolent of the late '80s -- but part of the appeal is its raggedness, as you can hear
INXS alternately cut loose (the ridiculous cocktail instrumental "On the Rocks") and craft their songs. And among all the loose ends are some pretty nifty little songs: the tight rocker "Move On" and the dance-rocker "Do Wot You Do" in particular could have fit on the proper album with a little tightening. There are enough of these rough gems to justify not just the release of this 25th Anniversary Edition, but also to justify its purchase for hardcore
INXS fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
