Kohala have long adapted Hawaiian musical concepts for an easy listening format, and in the aptly named Kohala Christmas they extend their musical style to a handful of traditional Christmas songs. As with the rest of the guitar trio's discography, the music is built around slowly developing themes and soft acoustic guitar work, rather than any new musical explorations or flights of virtuosity. Indeed, the three players are exceptional guitarists, and this album displays a small fragment of the basis behind that argument. However, beyond a single new composition ("Waimea Christmas Bells"), there is nothing in the album that can't be found in superior renditions performed either traditionally (by the classic artists -- Bing Crosby, Mel Tormé, etc.) or in a more innovative fashion by other artists. There are indeed arguably better Hawaiian Christmas albums available as well (Amy Hänaiali'i released an excellent one a year prior to Kohala's). Probably worth passing on this one.
