On the first track of Kool Heat, the line "My baby smokes" leads to an LSD reference; thus, this is not your standard boogaloo. Kool Heat is a rare album by an obscure "newyorican" band, one comprised of young members (and probably too many of them). The horns are dirty, but the singing and percussion are clean; the arrangements are sophisticated but not cluttered. "Boogaloo Baby" is the English vocal cut of choice, while "Kool Heat" is the instrumental. "Fantasy" is an interesting, exotic, English-vocal number, complete with bird calls.
