This collection really should just be credited to
the Skatalites, but since tenor saxophonist
Tommy McCook was something of the official leader of the band, the credit isn't all that far fetched. Clarity issues aside, this generous offering of some of the group's prime sides, both instrumental and vocal, makes for high-end listening. Produced by
Duke Reid from roughly 1962-1966, the 24 cuts include such classic ska moments as "Yard Broom," "Musical Storeroom," and "Night Food," as well as vocal highlights from Stranger & Patsy ("When I Call Your Name"),
Justin Hinds ("Carry Go Bring Home"), and
Eric "Monty" Morris ("Strongman Samson"). A fine way to get comfy with these legends of Jamaican music. ~ Stephen Cook
