Chant de Liberte is an album that shows
Beethova Obas' evolving style. The succeeding albums are more cohesive and his characteristic style more developed and silky, but this album still has an enjoyable vibe to it though. He writes almost all of his own material, and he mixes Haitian rhythms with Brazilian touches; however, the pot needs some stirring. On
Pa Prese, Si, and
Planet La, he employs other musicians who seem to take his grooves higher. Babylon, the last track on this album, is probably the best one, putting out a dark African percussive tone that is very danceable. Good effort, but he gets better down the line.
