Furtips present their giddy and goofy style of indie rock. The disc starts off with the short and chaotic "I Said No." The second track, "Water Into Wine," is the first structured song. It highlights the back-and-forth vocals between guest vocalist Sandra van Karssen and the singer known only as Royal Penguin Saver. The band's eccentricity continues on "Two Things About Cars," with additional vocals from
Camille Courbois and
Jane Pol. The most engaging thing about the song, and many of the band's songs, is the diversity of instruments and the imaginative use of those instruments. Maracas and a wealth of noisemakers combine to make
Furtips' music a sonic roller coaster. The band's use of traditional instruments (guitar, drums, bass) is energetic and enthralling. On "Velpon" the keyboard playfully creates a disjointed foundation for the unbalanced yet inventive song. Things occasionally settle down, like on "Thank You J.P." and "Zoom & Dash." The songs calm the listener down before the band dashes back into their normal, chaotic sound. The chanting vocals on "Don't Be Weird" give way to the upheaval of "Piano Go Home" and the steady and awkwardly relaxed "Pancake Heaven." The disc ends with the mild and simple "Surprise Me," a surprising finish indeed. It stands out in a collection of mostly offbeat songs.
