COMPILATION

Leyendas de la Fania is an eight-volume series that samples some of the finest tracks and some of the greatest artists who released singles and albums on the legendary label created by Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci in 1964. This second entry focuses mostly on label heavyweights, if not always their most popular tracks, and this is a plus. These dozen cuts include tracks by some real legends including: Ray Barretto, Ismael Rivera, Charlie Palmieri (“Coco,” originally issued on Allegre, contains one of his most brilliant piano solos, where jazz meets charanga), Bobby Valentín, the Fania All-Stars (whose "Sin Tu Carino" is a late-'70s groover with elements of disco production in its salsa presentation), Willie Colón (“Chonqui” is one of the set’s highlights), Pete Rodriguez, Celia Cruz with Tito Puente (“Tinicue” is a stone killer), and Joe Bataan (“Para Puerto Rico Rico Voy” is a gorgeous midtempo groover). Vol. 2, by contrast, is arguably stronger than Vol. 1, and provides a deeper view into the wealth of material in Fania’s vaults. ~ Thom Jurek
