Shortly after the release of the hugely successful Song For Juli, Jesse Colin Young reconvened several of his longtime backing musicians (including drummer Jeffrey Myer, keyboardist Scott Lawrence and reedman Jim Rothermel) and recorded Lightshine. The album sheds some of its predecessor’s folky atmosphere, and instead embraces the rising trends of mid-Seventies pop-rock. The humming flute of “Grey Day” and “Susan” echoes Chicago and the Doobie Brothers, while the understated funk of “The Cuckoo” fits easily alongside contemporaneous songs by Steely Dan. Like many albums of its era, Lightshine comes off sweet and warm, with an undercurrent of forlornness. If you need a one song summation of West Coast pop music circa 1974, look no further than “California Child” and its dippy-yet-wonderful refrain: “California girl / You have filled my world / With the music of your gentle loving / Singing with your hands / You have taught my body how to understand / You know I’m your man.”
