In 2001, Philippine rock band Itchyworms released Little Monsters Under Your Bed. The music of Itchyworms is characterized by happy-sounding, lighthearted vocals and various stylistic changes within a single song. The album mostly has an acoustic sound, although at times there are hard-edged chords and guitar lines. The opening "Mellow Carousel" sets the tone of the album, and starts on a sound resembling a carousel, leading to a quick and carefree melody sung in a lighthearted manner by Itchyworms heard over a fast-paced chord progression, which gets even faster on the words "Mellow carousel." On "Happy House," the happy and spry music camouflages an ominous foreboding in the lyrics: "If you wanna step inside/Just knock upon my door/I'll make sure when you get out/You won't come back no more." Another part of the song is performed at a slower pace, another sequence sounds dreamy and languid, and yet another sequence has a fast guitar solo. While the songs sound like a mishmash at first, after several listens it makes better sense, although there is a weirdness about the album that never goes away. One of the album's best songs is also one of the most conventional, the punkish "Find and Seek," on which the guitars wield reverb-drenched, hard-edged chords and the singing is straightforward and has a purpose. "Happy Birthday" has a rockabilly ambience, while "Bituin" (Star) is a lengthy, languid outing. Itchyworms appear influenced by, among others, Philippine rock band the Eraserheads, who also often explore various directions. This is a strange album, but it has something to offer, although it might take repeated listens to find it.
