Irishmen in New York, Tommy Makem and his long time companions, the Clancy Brothers, garnered respect from both their compatriots and the rest of the folk music community worldwide. In this live concert, recorded at Makem's own club on 57th Street in Manhattan, they perform a set of music that is simply charming.
"The Minstrel Boy/Let Erin Remember," a medley of traditional songs written by the famous poet Thomas Moore, is especially stirring, as is "The Winds Are Singing Freedom," a tune of hope and reconciliation. In contrast, the sorrowful "Kitty Bawn O'Brien" ruminates on lost love. Makem claims that this is one of the most poignant of all love songs and he may be right. One of his later recordings, LIVE AT THE IRISH PAVILION is also one of Makem's most intimate and compelling.
