One assumes that the talented flute duo Married Flutes -- Lisa-Maree Amos and Peter Sheridan -- wishes to be taken seriously, and hearing these lively performances on this self-produced disc may incline the listener to give the two the benefit of the doubt. But Lovebirds, their 2005 release on their eponymous label, may put off a few listeners because its title, cover art, and PR may suggest a smarmy couple that is more interested in promoting their marital status than their artistry. That said, Amos and Sheridan are still fine flutists with musical integrity and a good sense for programming the light, unpretentious fare they like to play. Their selection of pieces is tasteful and interesting, with a pleasant mix of the familiar --
Gabriel Fauré's Sicilienne, Op. 78, and Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11 -- with the less widely known but agreeable works of contemporary composers
Peter Schickele,
Gary Schocker, Steven Van Wye, and Caesar Giovannini. With graceful accompaniment from pianist Richard Berent, Amos and Sheridan deliver smooth performances with controlled dynamics, balanced timbres, and sincere expression, and make this CD much better than it may first appear. But beware the extremely boosted levels, which are quite "hot," a safe middle volume is required for comfortable home listening.
