Cari Lekebusch is most well known as a member of the Swedish techno mafia, producing and DJing with the same pummeling style as fellow Swedes
Joel Mull,
Adam Beyer, and
Christian Smith. So this early recording, his first actual album, will come as a surprise to those devoted to the loop-heavy percussion that is Lekebusch's stock and trade. While the Harthouse label posts a warning of trance silliness (especially a release dated this late), this is actually a jackin' acid affair. Tracks like "Deprograming" and "Virgin Mind" trade on the dark Euro-rave tricks of wicked sound effects and wet acid synths that sounded fresh once. "Virus" does the same, but with a funky breakbeat, while "DD 66" makes the most of the mandatory "listening techno" excursion. This CD is an unexpected moment that is thoroughly caught in early-'90s techno. It is not bad by those standards, but is probably something that Lekebusch's current work would prefer that you forget. ~ Joshua Glazer
