The soundtrack to a theatrical adaptation of Franz Kafka's classic short story, The Metamorphosis,
Koppel plays all the (mostly instrumental) music on accordion, keyboards, and sampler on this impressively imaginative evocation of the surreal doom and paranoia that characterize Kafka's settings. Aside from the slightly more updated electronic textures, this isn't far in spirit from
Savage Rose's early-'70s classic
Dodens Triumf, with its alternation of dark circus-like passages and jarring, disquieting interjections. For those who are disappointed by
Savage Rose's recent mellow MOR pop material, it's solid evidence that
Koppel is still capable of turning on the juice for some intriguing, dark modern composition. Or perhaps he is reserving his more ambitious work for his solo as a serious composer, while maintaining
Savage Rose's career for the pop audience.
