Philippine rockers
Matchbox released this album in 1996. The band's sound includes vocals, rhythm, and lead guitars, bass, and drums. Their style is varied, but mostly rock-based; some of the music has a folk ambience to it, while other songs are pop and a few others are somewhat easy listening. The album opener "Langit Na Naman" (trans: It's Heaven Again) grooves on a compelling chord progression, but the guitar is somewhat tinny, and the singing on the chorus is a bit strained. "Kisapu" opens on a repeated guitar chord sequence separated by measured silences. This sequence segues into full-bodied rhythm guitar over which the vocalist sings an agreeable tune. "Ngayon" (trans: Today) is a pop-inflected tune built on pleasant rhythm guitar, sounding a bit like
the Beatles' 1964 song "'Til There Was You." Yano, another Philippine rock band with folk overtones, is likely a strong influence, particularly regarding the folkier tunes, but Yano's lyrics are much concerned about inequities in Philippine society, while
Matchbox is concerned about girls and love. The band displays imagination and creativity in their arrangements. For example, "Itlog Na Pula" (trans: Red Egg), a song about unrequited love, opens on pleasant guitar strumming which supports an easy-listening melody; the pace picks up and moves on a ska-based rhythm.
